Governor Newsom Signs SB 73 to Strengthen Election Integrity Protections in California

SB 73 takes effect immediately, strengthening ballot security protections and giving California election officials stronger tools to respond to election interference and unlawful access to voting systems.

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 73 into law, a major step toward strengthening election integrity protections in California and safeguarding public trust in our democracy.

The bill takes effect immediately and comes after growing concern over attempts to interfere with election administration, including the improper seizure of election materials here in Riverside County.

At today’s press conference, Assemblymember Gail Pellerin said SB 73 will help ensure elections remain “secure, transparent, and administered according to the rule of law.” The bill strengthens protections around ballot chain of custody, prohibits unauthorized access to voting systems and election data, and gives election officials stronger tools to respond to election interference. Governor Newsom, referring to the seizure of election materials in Riverside County as an “abuse,” also warned against growing attacks on democratic institutions and public confidence in elections nationwide.

“Voters should never wonder whether ballots were improperly handled,” Pellerin said.

The fight to protect democratic participation is unfolding in our communities, our counties, and the institutions that shape everyday life across California.
